About Main Street
Preserving History • Supporting Business • Building Community
The Decatur Main Street Program is dedicated to preserving our historic downtown while strengthening the heart of our community. As part of the Texas Main Street Program, Decatur is proud to be recognized as a Designated Main Street Community.
Our Story
The Main Street movement began in 1977 as a national effort to revitalize historic downtowns across America. Texas quickly became one of the first six states to launch a statewide program in 1981 under the Texas Historical Commission.
Decatur joined this initiative to ensure that our historic square—anchored by the iconic Wise County Courthouse—remains a vibrant center of commerce, culture, and community life.
Our Mission
The Decatur Main Street Program works to:
Promote and stimulate the downtown economy
Attract and support diverse audiences through shopping, dining, and entertainment
Assist local businesses with grants and resources
Host signature events that draw residents and visitors alike
Preserve historic character while planning for future growth
Community Impact
The Main Street Program invests in downtown through:
Business Improvement Grants – including sign, paint, and façade grants to help preserve and enhance storefronts
Special Events – like the Decatur Swirl, launched in 2011, which has grown into a beloved annual food-and-wine celebration supporting holiday lighting and community projects
Partnerships & Projects – including wayfinding signage, district expansion, and seasonal beautification projects like holiday displays
Every improvement helps ensure that Decatur’s downtown remains not only a historic treasure but also a thriving destination for commerce and community gatherings.
